On August 7th Larry and Leslie were riding their motorcycle when tragedy struck. A driver blew through a red light and t-boned them killing Larry instantly. Leslie was induced into a coma to increase her chances of living. Unsure of when their mother would be able to come out of her coma, 4 sisters were forced to plan a funeral for their father. They were told that they may need to plan the funeral for two people since they were unsure if Leslie would be able to pull through.

The House family has been longtime friends of mine. Ashley and I went to high school together and we were swing dance partners back in the day. I remember one summer we spent just about every day in their backyard swing dancing. We killed all the grass which I am sure Larry wasn’t too happy about!

When I heard the news of what happened I felt helpless. I couldn’t possibly imagine what the family was going through. I kept thinking what it would be like for Leslie to not only wake up to find out her husband didn’t make it, but also that the funeral had already happened. The only thing I could think of was offering to photograph the funeral. Funerals are not something that is normally photographed. But in this case, it would allow Leslie to look through the images and have closure.

Once the funeral was over I sent the family a digital gallery to view with Leslie. Then I thought to myself, what if the gallery expires or the hard drive fails and they lose these images forever!? I felt compelled to give the family a physical album of the images so they could pass it down from generation to generation. These moments I captured were sad, yes, but they were important. They captured the legacy of Larry and those he loved most. The Power of Print is so much greater than a digital image.

I started thinking about how we all take photos every day on our cell phones etc that we barely ever look at again. I asked myself what the point of a photo is? The word that kept coming back to me was “Legacy”. Photographs freeze moments in time. Sometimes they are sad moments. Sometimes they are full of joy. They capture the essence of who we are in that moment of time. They are how future generations will remember our laugh, smile, ugly cry face, etc. Photographs are important! But what if we never print them? What if they stay on our phone or on our computer’s hard drive? What if those devices fail? Those moments will be lost forever!

Larry’s family will have their album for generations to come. Those memories will fade but the photographs will always bring them back.

Print your photos! Hang them on your walls! You never know how much time you have on this earth. Embrace the power of print!
